1. The Misfits – “Teenagers From Mars”
(MR) Every year, my ritual is to put on Misfits "Collection I" in the car the week leading up to Devil's Night & not listen to anything else. Misfits for me are Halloween. Nothing gets me in the spirit quicker.
2. Dead Kennedys – “Halloween″
(MR) Jello has a way with words. Righteous bile puked into the shape of the alphabet. Incredibly sinister view on dressing up like a clown once a year & being able to actually admit it to yourself.
3. Xander Harris – “Tanned Skin Dress”
(JB) an acquaintance of mine and damn good musician. This dude burns the candle at both ends, and likes it! Good luck keeping up with his spectacular output.
4. DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince – “Nightmare On My Street”
(MS) I have vivid memories of freaking myself out by listening to this song on my yellow Sony walkman. Honestly, the piano part still sort of scares me. Also I'm pretty sure this was the first tape I owned.
5. Tuxedomoon – “No Tears”
(MR) There was a time in my life I was obsessed with Tuxedomoon. Needless to say, it was a very dark time. Tuxedomoon presents the perfect crossroad between Stoner & Kraut Rock. And legitimately strange as all hell.
6. Nine Inch Nails – "The Collector"
(JB) This track still rocks 7 years on. With a spooky title that goes much deeper than that. Like a hatchet in your head.
7. The Cure - "Burn"
(MR) If I were ever to come back from the dead to avenge my love, this would mos def be my soundtrack. The Cure's darkly romantic opus & some of its gloomiest work since "Pornography".
8. Red Lorry, Yellow Lorry – “Monkeys On Juice”
(MR) Another favorite from my "goth" period. Wait, did I ever have a "goth" period? Did I have one without knowing it? I'm a fan of gloomy british pop, starting with The Smiths. I still very much love this song & have fond memories of it, playing it loudly & driving recklessly down east sunset blvd. during the halloweens I spent in my old neighborhood of Echo Park. I was very much the monkey on juice.
9. Beak > – “Liar”
(MR) I'm a huge fan of this side project of Geoff Barrow. I love his recording ethos & his obvious love of 70's era Kraut Rock, with influences of Neu, Can, Klaus Dinger & Harmonia proudly on display. This song just sounds like Halloween.
10. Ryan Adams – “Halloweenhead”
(MS) I picked this song for obvious reasons. And also, I love this record. Not sure it's about Halloween, I usually assume his songs are about his struggle with heroin, relationships gone wrong, or I guess all of the above.
11. Dead Man's Bones – “My Bodies A Zombie For You”
(JB) Best actor turned music maker yet. Great album from Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields. Gosling sings this track and it's a perfect mesh of Halloween, Arcade Fire, and a childrens choir.
12. Camille Saint-Saens – “Danse Macabre in G Minor, Op. 40″
(MR) It's not Halloween without Danse Macabre.
Here's a new video for "Meditation", beautifully edited by our own, Michael Rey!
